Alex Fitch with Hannah Eaton and Hannah Berry

Our guest in August 2025 was Clair Waller, Digital Archivist at the Templeman Library, University of Kent. She was talking about the University's British Cartoon Archive, one of the special collections housed by the institution and the current exhibition on display at their campus in Canterbury: ‘Laughter in the Long Twentieth Century’.

This exhibition explores cartoons about the rise of fascism – focussing on David Low's work – and the (in)visibility of LGBTQ+ people and communities since the 1960s as featured in British newspaper and magazine illustrations, and runs until mid September. Clair spoke to our regular host Alex Fitch about the founding of the British Cartoon Archive, how the current exhibition was curated, and much more.
