The magic realism of kitchen sink comics

Join us online on 7pm Monday 26th July as Alex Fitch talks to graphic novelist Scott Jason Smith about Marble Cake. The book mixes kitchen sink drama with elements of magical realism as the lives of various characters intertwine in and beyond a supermarket in South London against a backdrop of disappearances and petty crime. Alex and Scott discuss the latter's catalogue of short strips as well as this longer work, including Scott's involvement with Top Shelf's 2.0 webcomics project, adapting poetry for comics, and moving back and forth between monochrome comics and colour.

Eve Greenwood in conversation with Alex Fitch 7pm 28 June 2021

Cartoon County welcomes Eve Greenwood, small press comics publisher and creator, for an online chat followed by Q&A.

Alex Fitch talks to cartoonist Eve Greenwood about their self published comics such as Orange Plates, Horse Bursts Out of Ground, Track and Field, and the acclaimed title Inhibit which was nominated for a number of Scottish Independent Comic Book Alliance awards.

Alex and Eve also discuss the small press publishing company that Eve runs - Quindre Press - which channels a percentage of profits into charities helping LGBT+ people, and other marginalised / vulnerable members of the community.

Join Brighton's friendly comics meet-up, now online and open to anyone, anywhere in the world, for free. Cartoon County lasts just an hour, and talks are recorded for Alex's Panel Borders radio show on Resonance FM.

The Inking Woman is three years old! But this 250-year history of women cartoonists and comics artists in Britain is changing rapidly every year - more creators, more international, more diverse, and more online. How has the scene changed for women cartoonists and comics artists in the last three years, and what are the opportunities and challenges? How has the past year affected commissions from publishers and organisations? Authors Nicola Streeten and Cath Tate are both legendary in their support for women creators – Cath as the founder of Cath Tate Cards, publisher of so many women cartoonists of the 70s and 80s, and Nicola as the co-founder of Laydeez Do Comics, now known as LDComics, a truly international network of comic creators, led by women, open to all, with a focus on the every day. The Inking Woman is a record of over 150 comic creators, showcasing their work and careers, and an invaluable resource for anyone wanting to celebrate comics history.

Alex Fitch (Resonance FM) will be interviewing Nicola and Cath on Monday 26 April 7pm-8pm for Cartoon County's last-Monday-in-the-month meet - now online! Register here and we'll send you an email link to access on the day. Do send us any questions you have in advance, or use the live chat on the day.
