Graphic Brighton: Drawing in the Margins
Come and join a brilliant weekend of presentations and panels on 'Drawing in the Margins' - comics with a difference and about difference, at the University of Brighton's flagship Sallis Benney Theatre. Organised by our very own Alex Fitch, of Resonance FM, and his colleagues Barbara Chamberlin and Paul Slater at the University of Brighton, the weekend promises a stellar bunch of cartoonists including Emma Vieceli, Gareth Brookes, Karrie Fransman, Warren Pleece, Francesca Cassavetti, Dan Locke and many, many more. Panels on Saturday address multiculturalism, ageing, pregnancy and motherhood, homelessness, and the status of comics as a medium. Details on the Graphic Brighton website here and tickets available here.
The weekend kicks off on the Friday night at 6.45 with a panel about gay manga, with Inko, Chie Kutsuwada and Ilya, followed by local publisher Myriad's Quick Strips gala at 8.30, with no fewer than 14 cartoonists presenting their work in 5 minutes each. Compered by Nye Wright, the evening is entirely free, and a brilliant opener to what promises to be a fascinating weekend. Book here.

Monday 20 April: Antony Johnston - scripting for games and comics
This month we've brought our Cartoon County meeting forward one week to take advantage of the opportunity of having an excellent comics writer as our speaker. Antony Johnston is in Brighton this weekend at a games conference, so we've grabbed him to chat before he heads out of town!
As well as writing the scripts for games such as Dead Space, ZombiU and Shadow of Mordor, Antony is a prolific comics writer who's worked for Marvel, Oni Press, Avatar and Image. He's made a name for himself adapting various Alan Moore prose works, and penned many creator-owned sf and fantasy stories, like Wasteland, Umbral and The Fuse. He's also written three different versions of Daredevil, so it'll be educational to hear his views on reinventing a character for different audiences.
Alex Fitch will be conducting the talk for podcast on Panel Borders. And you can hear Alex's previous chat with the writer in 2009 on Panel Borders for Resonance FM: https://panelborders.wordpress.com/2009/05/28/panel-borders-adapting-prose-for-manga-games-and-genre-comics
So join us on Monday, 20th April, upstairs at The Cricketers, Black Lion St, Brighton, from 6 onward, with the talk starting later at 7.45.
